Had my first ex-family (as in 'outside of' not 'used to be') photo shoot yesterday. I'm pretty pleased with the results. Out of about 400 snaps, I got about 75 winners. I'm happy with that ratio!! I've got a lot of post processing to do, but here are a few samples.

Here are a few pictures from our trip this weekend. It was a blast. There were plenty of monotonous climbs and just as many exhilarating decents. We saw a lynx, couple of dead skunks, weed smoking Canadians, nice drivers, mean drivers, blue skies, misty gray skies, lots of food, and lots of K's (canadian for miles...sort of). We went 175 miles (281.63 K's).

Enjoy!

More Mike-u:
I did not find it
My old mirror is still lost
I like my new one

Inspired by Steph's lyrical posts...

Once I had a mirror that showed me where I'd been.
It told when to get out 'the way, it also told me when
approaching cars were driven by the stupid or insane
who'd rather talk on celly-phones than stay inside their lanes

But alas my lonely mirror, my poor old mirror is gone
I've searched and searched, up high and low, intently and so long
And Oh...this weekend when I will be needing it the most
For Jim and I will saddle up and ride out to the coast

So to the bike shop today I will ride
and purchase a NEW mirror, once I'm inside
And when I get home, I guarantee
I'll find my old mirror, just waiting for me!

Saddle Sore?

On Saturday, Jim and I rode our bikes 30 miles in and 1000 feet up the coast range, and 30 miles back down into Hillsboro. We're planning and "epic" adventure for Memorial Day weekend (depending on the weather - we're wimps), and we needed to get a taste of what it's going to be like. The trip should be around 170 miles total. 80 miles from Hillsboro to Hug Point (no jokes please) via Hwy 26 and Canon Beach. Then 60 miles on day two from Hug Point through Tillamook and up to the summit of the coast range. On day three, just a measley 30 miles back home. The best part is we'll be carrying all of our gear with us. It's like backpacking...but we'll call it bikepacking (aka Bike Touring).

I have to say, I'm quite impressed with our efforts. 60 miles in one day is farther than I ever considered riding. And fortunately, not a whole lot of "sore buttness" resulted.

Our scouting trip was wonderful. It was a beautiful day. Some blue sky poked through, but mostly it was overcast and cool - which was just perfect for riding. We met some other friendly cyclists and saw lots of beautiful trees, fields and valleys. We felt really good most of the way. Near the end, the pedaling got a bit laborious, but with better calorie planning, I think we'll be just fine.

Riding your bike makes you appreciate a lot of things. The scenery goes by so much more slowly that when you're driving that you really have a chance to drink it in. And there's nothing better than riding past a gas station when it's $3.59 a gallon.

Thanks Jim for a great ride...can't wait for the big one.

What's the term for the generational trend of Starbucks sipping/laptop toting/"writing my first novel" people?

I don't know either, but that's me today...except for the first novel part. Had to take the car in for an oil change today, and brought my laptop, so I could continue "working" for the rest of the afternoon. Whatever you call them, I'm enjoying being a poser.

By the way. What is up with Starbucks? I was under the impression that they had free wireless?? Weren't you? I must be misguided. Apparently, you have to subscribe to T-moblie Hot Spots to get access here...UNLESS you sit really close to the window that's across the walkway from the Mac Store, then you can pirate their WiFi connection for free!!

So, here I am at Starbucks, working in a totally different way than I used to work at Starbucks...enjoying this much better.

Its funny to me how the people are the same, even though they have different names. Lindz - you can relate.

There's the older store manager who is a Starbucks lifer, but can't really find a way to get out. She's "managing" today, but she's been sitting in the back room since she arrived. There's the young "partner" who is just starting out and incorrectly calls a drink to the barista who has been around through 5 or 6 new-hires and doesn't really have time to pay attention...making the newbie call it wrong more than once before the other, totally jaded, long time employee writes up the cup. Everything feels familiar...when I grabbed an empty half-half caraffe and took it to the bar for a new one, I remembered how the cold carraffe feels when you pull it out of the fridge and is immediately covered in condensation. She smiled at me and apologized for the empty, and it could have been me. Then there's the overpoweringly friendly barista who is singing along to the house music a little more loudly and awkwardly that one might hope from a barista. But you can tell she is happy in her little world. Trips to and from the back room with an apron-full of syrup bottles. Large, clear plastic garbage bags full of steaming coffe grounds. Rows of coffee beans with fancy little stickers indicating the blend.

"Do you need milk?"

"Yes - 4 and 4!" (4 whole gallons, 4 non-fat gallons)

It's almost like I spent 5 years of my life in the room...the sound of chairs chattering into place across the permantly dingy tile floors, blender motors powering through chunks of ice then red-lining when an air pocket surrounds the blades, call after call of ridiculously long and complicated custom drink orders, the drone of espresso machines pouring shot and dumping the grounds.

It definitley takes me back...and even though I'm glad to be blogging instead of sweeping in Starbucks, it was a good 5 years.

We had a phenomenal weekend in Sunriver with Thompsons and Jaggers. I acutally used the word "phenomenal" after a sun-bathed day on the slopes of Mt. Bachelor. I also found time to take some pictures. I'm realizing more and more how vital lighting is to photography...seems pretty elementary when you actually think about it.

But nonetheless, I'm always pleasantly surprised at how much better my shots turn out when I seek out the right light. All of these were taken before 7:30...I got up each day before sunrise to practice.

Here are the results. As you can see in the last one...Lily and Becky got up too!

Enjoy!!

It was a good day on the hill! Eric skied like champ.

[on the way up to SkiBowl] Eric: "I'm not going to be going on any black diamonds or anything..."

[on the way down like 15 black diamond runs] Eric; "Yeeeeeehaaaaaaw!"
